Fulton Policy on Political Candidates

The Fulton Neighborhood Association (FNA) is a 501(c)(3) organization and is therefore “prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office.”

The FNA can only allow candidates to speak as candidates (campaign) if we allow equal access and opportunity for all candidates. Campaigning at or during FNA meetings (including but not limited to board meetings, annual meetings, and committee meetings) is prohibited, though candidates who are running for office are welcome to attend FNA meetings as members of the community. The FNA works with groups such as The League of Women Voters to organize nonpartisan forums where all candidates are invited to speak as candidates. We also offer the option for all candidates to purchase a table at certain community events such as the Fulton Fall Festival. At this type of event, candidates may display campaign materials and speak to attendees as candidates, but we do ask that they refrain from fundraising. When a candidate is not at their table they can enjoy the event as a member of the community and not campaign.

In certain circumstances, local, state, and/or federally elected incumbent candidates may be invited to speak at an FNA meeting as representatives of the community. This is not an opportunity for these candidates to campaign, and they are speaking only as elected officials delivering relevant information to the community members in attendance. All community members are welcome to attend FNA meetings when an incumbent candidate will be speaking, but no mention of upcoming elections can be made by any candidate or community member. No campaigning for office can be conducted inside or outside during a meeting of the FNA. We request that all members of the community be respectful of the Fulton Neighborhood Organization’s role as a nonpartisan organization.
