Streetscape & Traffic Management
The Streetscape and Traffic Management Committee is represented by neighborhood business owners and residents with a mission to make West 50th Street a more pedestrian friendly and attractive environment.
The committee meets as needed and is currently working on improvements in Fulton’s three business nodes, located at West 50th and France, Xerxes and Penn Avenue South. Another area of focus is pedestrian safety and traffic management on Xerxes Ave S through the heart of the neighborhood, with possible improvements suggested at the 51st and 54th street crossings. Many improvements have already been completed at the 50th and France business node, including new banners, holiday lighting, garbage receptacles and planters.
A fully comprehensive approach to pedestrian, transit and cycling within the neighborhood and how these modes interact is at the core of these objectives. Improvements like the pedestrian crossing at 47th and Xerxes promote safer interactions at crossings. New signage and lane shifting at 50th and Xerxes were also updated.
Recently the FNA has taken to leading recurring walks with residents through the neighborhood to continue to understand the needs and possible areas of focus. An increased strategy on cycling corridors, including the North/South route up Upton Ave and continued focus on accessibility and lighting are the types of insights this group seeks.
FNA, in conjunction with Lynnhurst Neighborhood Association, created a 50th St. Vision Statement in 2015 which outlines the neighborhood’s desires for future development along this stretch of road.
