Trey, a 3rd grader, just had his birthday party. Instead of presents, he asked for donations to rebuild the Linden Hills Tennis Courts. He raised $125 for the cause. This is how important tennis is to Minneapolis.
A group of neighbors began a grassroots effort to rebuild the courts and is working with the Linden Hills Neighborhood Council (LHiNC) and the Minneapolis Park Board. Due to budget cuts, the Park Board is unable to fund the project. The group is applying for grants, but the majority of the $200,000 needed will come from private donations.
The Linden Hills courts are home to SWAC, Southwest High School boys and girls tennis teams, the Park Board tennis programs and ICT. Every summer ICT reaches 100+ neighborhood kids with its program at Linden Hills park. This year all tennis programs have been moved to Pershing Park.
The next fundraising event will be a community garage sale held on the tennis courts May 14 during the Linden Hills Festival. If you wish to donate something to the event please contact the park at 612-370-4913. It is an easy way to support the courts with a donated item you no longer need.
