UPDATE
The City of Minneapolis Public Works Department was not involved in the creation, endorsement, or distribution of the mailer you may have received around June 9, 2025. That postcard was independently produced and mailed by “a concerned West Fulton neighborhood homeowner,” as noted in small print on the back of the mailer.
While it is accurate that property owners will be assessed for street reconstruction or resurfacing (depending on the street) costs, the information linking those assessments to the inclusion of rain gardens—or Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI)—is incorrect. Property assessments are not based on individual design features such as rain gardens or pedestrian curb ramps.
The planned rain gardens are included to meet the City’s stormwater management requirements and are not tied to the rate or amount homeowners are being assessed. These features will be located (primarily) in mid-block locations where conditions—such as soil type, drainage needs, tree preservation, and utilities, etc..—make them most feasible and cost effective.
At this time, the project team is still incorporating feedback from the most recent round of public engagement. We are working to refine the concept design to reflect both community input and adopted City policies, while also ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to stormwater and infrastructure.
