Congratulations to Steve Young, FNA President, who was honored on April 20 as a Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board Volunteer of the Year for 2010. Steve and nine other recipients were recognized at an awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 20 at MPRB Headquarters, located at 2117 West River Road.
Steve Young, Fulton Neighborhood Association board member, wears many hats in the community. Since 2000, Steve has served as a volunteer coach for Pershing/Linden Hills (SWAC) youth soccer. In 2008, Steve began coordinating the Fulton Fall Festival, the park’s largest annual event. Steve and the rest of the festival committee recruit volunteers to assist with serving food, selling tickets, monitoring the silent auction, and supervising children’s activities. In 2010, the event generated money for the Fulton Neighborhood Association, a local food shelf, and Pershing Park. In June 2009, Steve proposed the idea of installing irrigation at Pershing Park atheletic fields and began actively securing funding and collaborative partners for the project. The field improvement and irrigation project is set to begin in July, 2011. “Steve brings leadership, community building, a spirit of volunteerism, responsiveness and creativity to the programs, events and roles he assumes,” said recreation staff member, Marc Holtey. “He has also inspired other community members to volunteer. We have appreciated his ideas, support and feedback over the years.”
In addition to the award, in Steve’s honor Pershing Park will receive $500. The funds will be used to support the Park’s Youth Gardening program. We are proud of you, Steve! Thanks for your commitment to the parks and to the Fulton community.
